What's Cain Park?
Cain Park is a summer performing art park owned and operated by the City of Cleveland Heights.
Cleveland Heights City Council
Edward J. Kelley, Mayor
Phyllis L. Evans, Vice Mayor
Bonita W. Caplan
Nancy J. Dietrich
Kenneth Montlack
Mark A. Tumeo
Dennis R. Wilcox
Robert C. Downey, City Manager
No ordinary City park, Cain Park begins where most leave off: an outdoor, intimate, covered theater similar to a mid-sized off-Broadway space (Alma Theater); an outdoor covered amphitheater (Evans Amphitheater); an air-conditioned art gallery (Audrey & Harvey Feinberg Art Gallery), and outstanding programming that includes professional theatrical productions, a nationally recognized Arts Festival, cabaret series, professional dance companies, children's programming, and concerts featuring national, regional, and local performers, surrounded by 22 acres of bicycle and jogging paths, tennis and basketball courts, a wading pool, playground, skate park, and picnic areas.
Where do I park?
There are more than 900 free on-street parking spaces within an easy walk of Cain Park. And through our partners, we're able to provide a parking shuttle service for certain events.
Cain Park was built in 1938 in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Back then, cars were not considered the major means of transportation so no parking lot was ever in the plans. We value our available green space as parkland.
I've never been to Cain Park for a performance. Where do I enter?
Although Cain Park stretches between Lee and South Taylor roads (bordered by Superior Road and Hyde Park Avenue), the performing and visual arts part of the park is right in the middle. First-timers are sometimes surprised to find out Cain Park has 2 theaters where events are scheduled. It's helpful for you to know in which theater you're attending the event so you can choose the closest park entrance. But no matter where you enter, just follow the walkway and you're sure to come upon the place you're looking for!
This is where we suggest folks enter:
|
| Event Location |
Suggested Park Entrance |
Alma Theater/ Alma Ticket Booth/ Alma Courtyard |
Lee Road (E1 on Park Map) |
Feinberg Art Gallery |
Lee Road (E1 on Park Map) |
Evans Amphitheater* |
Goodnor & Superior (E2 on Park Map) or Superior Park/South Compton (E4 on Park Map) *There are 2 entrances to the Evans Amphitheater: the west entrance is closer to the Lee Road park entrance (E1 on Park Map) and the east entrance is closer to the Goodnor & Superior park entrance (E2 on Park Map). But if you have to pick up Evans Amphitheater pre-paid tickets, they will be held in the Main Ticket Office. |
Main Ticket Office/ Administration Building |
Goodnor & Superior (E2 on Park Map) |
Cain Park Arts Festival |
Use any entrance: artist booths line both sides of the park walkways from Lee Road to the Alma Courtyard and from the area outside the Main Ticket Office to the park's wading pool. (Entrance Map ) |
How do I dress?
However you'd like - there is no dress code. Folks tell us they like the casual, informal atmosphere and dress accordingly. But the park can turn chilly toward the end of a theater performance or concert - even in the middle of summer. So you may want to bring a jacket or sweater, just in case.
Does everyone need a ticket to get in, even for free shows?
Tickets are not needed for free shows except for those specified under the listing. But regardless of age, every person attending a ticketed event at Cain Park, including children and babies, must have a proper ticket. We require adult supervision of all children admitted to any performance, and we strongly urge parents to remove children immediately if they are creating a disturbance. No children under the age of five will be admitted to the Alma Cabaret series or the Alma Theater musical production.
Do you cancel the show if it rains?
All performances go on, rain or shine. Both outdoor theaters are covered. The only seating area that is exposed to the elements is the lawn of the Evans Amphitheater.
What happens if we're late for a performance?
We make every effort to start Cain Park events on time - so please allow ample time for travel, parking, and walking the well-lit pathways into the park. But if in spite of your good intentions, you arrive after the performance has started, you will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. Cain Park accepts no responsibility for any inconvenience.
You say "no refunds or exchanges" but what happens if Cain Park or the performer cancels the concert?
In those circumstances, we will refund your money. Refunds are only made to the original purchaser showing their ID and ticket stubs at the original point of purchase. If you purchased tickets through Cain Park, we will contact you regarding refund procedures. If you bought your tickets at Ticketmaster, you would go through Ticketmaster to get your refund.
What number should I give in case of an emergency?
216.371.3000 should be left with call services. Be sure to specify the name of the event (so we know in which theater we can find you) and your seat number for easy location.
What does "House Left" mean?
This is part of theatrical terminology. "House Left" and "House Right" refer to sections in the seating areas and it's the same in every theater. To figure out which side is which, go into the seating area and face the stage; the section on your left is "House Left" and the section on your right is "House Right." "House Center" is the center section.
We'll be picnicking on the lawn in the Evans Amphitheater before the concert. What can and can't I bring in?
Ohio state law and local ordinance prohibit bringing your own alcoholic beverages to Cain Park. The concession area sells wine, beer, coffee, soft drinks, and snacks. Also, do not bring glass items of any kind, candles (including incense or any type of burning insect repellant), firearms, pets, cameras, or recording devices into the theaters. Please be prepared to have your bags and coolers checked by Cain Park staff at the gates. You will be asked to return any unauthorized items to your vehicle or you can check them in at the Main Ticket Office and pick them up at the end of the concert or performance. Cain Park assumes no risk for these items.
Is there any place in Cain Park where I can make a phone call?
A Public telephone is located next to Main Ticket Office windows.
I know I'm not allowed to smoke in either of the theaters, but why can't I smoke if I'm sitting on the lawn during a concert?
The City of Cleveland Heights has enacted a no-smoking policy in all city facilities including Cain Park. This means there is no smoking within the gated areas, i.e. the Alma Theater, Alma Courtyard (the gated area surrounding the Art Gallery and Alma Theater), Audrey and Harvey Feinberg Art Gallery, Evans Amphitheater (both the covered, reserved seats and the open-air lawn area), Terrace (Evans main concession area), Colonnade (Evans covered picnic area), all restrooms and walkways that are within the gates of both theatres. Smoking is only permitted outside the gate entrances to both theaters.
What other rules should I be aware of?
Please do not distribute flyers or promotional materials without asking permission of Cain Park's Public Relations Office. We like to cooperate with other organizations but both partners need to benefit from the arrangement. If you ignore this request, Cain Park staff will confiscate your handouts and return them to you after audience members have left.
Before entering the performance, please turn off all audible message systems as well as beeping watches, cell phones and other electronic devices (or better yet, leave them at home!). Those who expect emergency calls please check your beepers at the Ticket Office and report your seat location to the attendant.
Cain Park reserves the right to ask disruptive patrons and those refusing to respect our rules to leave the premises without refund.
I think my car keys fell out of my pocket at a performance. Who could tell me if they were found?
Lost and Found is located in the Main Ticket Office. Items can be claimed during regular business hours. Please remember that the Ticket Office is closed every Monday and July 4.
How do I get a ride on one of those golf carts I see driving on the walkways?
No advance reservation is necessary. Courtesy vehicles, which are a special service made possible by Motorcars Honda/Toyota in Cleveland Heights, operate continuously from 1 hour prior to and up to showtime and immediately upon show's end. Those patrons for whom walking is difficult can be picked up from the following entrances: Lee Road and Goodnor/Superior. But remember…because of limited space and crowding of pathways, no courtesy vehicles can operate during the Cain Park Arts Festival.
Do you have a special phone number for hearing-impaired persons to use when buying tickets?
TTY Phone Line 216.371.6987. Hearing-impaired guests may call the Ticket Office directly and charge ticket purchases on MasterCard, VISA, Discover or American Express.
My father is hard of hearing and although I tell him your system amplifies sound sufficiently for him to hear, he's still afraid he won't hear what's going on. Do you have anything else that can help him out?
Wireless hearing enhancement systems are available free of charge in both theaters on a first-come, first-served basis. Please call 216.371.3000 (or he can call the Cain Park TDD phone line at 216.371.6987) in advance to make arrangements for the performance(s) he'll be attending. His driver's license or credit card will be retained in the Ticket Office until the receiver is returned at show's end.
Sometimes I'll see people doing sign language during a concert or play. Do you ever do that at Cain Park?
Audio-described/Sign-interpreted performances are available as a service to our visually and hearing-impaired patrons for the final performance of each musical theater production. For other events, with a minimum of 3 weeks advanced purchase of tickets and notice to Cain Park, American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation can be provided, pending availability of a professional ASL interpreter. Please call the Ticket Office in advance (216.371.3000 or 216.371.6987 voice/TTY) for information, ticket purchase and assistance.
How can I become an usher?
We encourage individuals, social groups, corporations, church/synagogue groups and students to volunteer as ushers at Cain Park. For more information on becoming a volunteer, call 216.291.5796 (September-April) or 216.371.3000 (May-August).
My mother used to perform at Cain Park in the 1930s-50s and hasn't been back since. She'd love to see a show there now, but she's in a wheelchair and doesn't think it would work out, getting her in and out. Is she correct?
Her memory is correct but a lot has changed since the 1950s. The $5 million renovation in 1989 allowed us to make the performing and visual arts areas accessible (in fact Cain Park received the Arts and Access Award in 1997 from Professional Flair for our accessibility to people with disabilities).
The 4 major entrances are now ramped and there is a drop-off area at the Lee Road entrance. There are 4 parking spaces next to the Lee Road entrance for use by vehicles with a valid handicap permit, on a first-come, first-served basis, at no charge. This lot is open during regular business hours. And courtesy vehicles (made possible by Motorcars Honda/Toyota in Cleveland Heights) run continuously from 1 hour prior to and up to showtime and immediately upon show's end. No advance reservation is necessary. You can be picked up from the following entrances: Lee Road and Goodnor/Superior.
Wheelchair access is available in both theaters, art gallery and all restrooms. There are no ramps to the Colonnade and Terrace from the reserved seats in the Evans Amphitheater, although there is an Evans Concession Area on the pathway closest to the House Left front seating area. If necessary, Cain Park staff and volunteers will be happy to help get your refreshments from the concession area. When purchasing tickets, please ask Cain Park staff for wheelchair seating or request other special assistance.
