DALA
Tuesday, July 19, 2011. Evans Amphitheater, 8pm. $2 general admission (no discounts). [buy tickets]
Juno nominees and winners of the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine of Dala
have released five albums and toured extensively across North America. Darlings of the Canadian music scene, Dala draw upon influences like The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, writing songs that are both catchy and insightful. Their song 'Horses' was the winner of the 2010 Celtic Radio Music Award in the contemporary category. Amanda's ethereal soprano voice blends seamlessly with Sheila's velvety alto, creating the lush harmonies that have become their trademark. 'What beautiful flights of melody and harmony, reminiscent of the Everly Brothers and Emmylou Harris.' Peterborough Examiner
THE JUGGERNAUT JUG BAND
Tuesday, July 26, 2011. Evans Amphitheater, 8pm. $2 general admission (no discounts). [buy tickets]
What do you get when you blend jazz, blues ragtime, swing and original music with washboards, washtubs, kazoos, jugs and various other sundry hardware? An evening of whimsy and appreciation for the eclectic things in our collective past performed by accomplished musicians who 'don’t let virtuosity get in the way of having fun' (Washington Post). The Juggernaut Jug Band are Roscoe Goose on jug, vocals, washboard, trumpet, blues harp and snare drum; Nick O’Time on vocals and acoustic bass; Skip Tracer on vocals, guitar, mandolin and banjo; and Smiley Habanero on vocals, guitar, kazoo and mandolin. Over the years, they’ve appeared with Arlo Guthrie, Riders in the Sky, Leon Russell, Mary Chapin Carpenter and in Actors’ Theatre of Louisville’s production of As You Like It!
SHIVERING TIMBERS
Tuesday, August 2, 2011. Evans Amphitheater, 8pm. $2 general admission (no discounts). [buy tickets]
The Plain Dealer describes Shivering Timbers as 'an idiosyncratic pop-folk-blues outfit from Akron,' the same little rustbelt city that produced Chrissie Hynde, Devo, and The Black Keys. They now emerge as the newest addition to that list led by husband and wife Jayson and Sarah Benn with Brad Thorla on drums. They're classics in that same great Akron tradition: they don't fit any mold but their own. Fellow Akronite Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys was moved enough to produce their debut album, We All Started In The Same Place, a collection of original home-spun and studio-crafted songs, folk songs and nursery rhymes re-imagined and inspired by the birth of their daughter.
NEWFOUND ROAD
Tuesday, August 9, 2011. Evans Amphitheater, 8pm. $2 general admission (no discounts). [buy tickets]
NewFound Road has been called one of the most exciting bluegrass bands of the new millennium. In the past year, the band has shared the stage with a diverse array of artists including Oscar winner The Swell Season, Grand Ole Opry member Joe Diffie, Rock-n-Roll Hall of Famer Mavis Staples, Grammy nominated R&B artist Ryan Shaw, folk icon Judy Collins, and a long list of country and bluegrass artists and legends. In 2010, NewFound Road made its debut on the legendary stage of The Grand Ole Opry. The music is powerful and streamlined, featuring hard-driving, soulful contemporary bluegrass as well as achingly beautiful country and pop ballads. This group of dynamic young veterans (Tim Shelton, Joe Booher, Jamey Booher, Josh Miller) has a live show that features a mix of their time-proven favorites, as well as music that at first glance would seem unlikely fare for an acoustic/bluegrass repertoire. Their newest recording is NFR-Live At The Down Home, their third release on the Rounder Records label and their first live recording.
