SISTERS OF SHEYNVILLE Workmen's Circle Yiddish Concert
Thursday, June 23, 2011. Evans Amphitheater, 7:30pm.
FREE ADMISSION (no ticket necessary). [buy tickets]

The Sisters of Sheynville were founded by Isabel Fryszberg, and Lenka Lichtenberg, two talented vocalists who share the Eastern European Jewish family experience and a driving passion for their music. This soulful group revitalizes Yiddish swing and klezmer music from the golden age of the mid-20th century fused with contemporary jazz. Inspired by the Barry Sisters' Yiddish swing vocals of the 30's and 40's, this high-energy, all-female sextet features intricate three-part harmony supported by a crack ensemble of some of Toronto's leading jazz and klezmer instrumentalists. In memory of Eugenia and Henry Green

$30 reserved, $25 lawn in advance. $33/28 day of show. [buy tickets]

Over the last four decades, Arlo Guthrie has toured throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia winning a broad and dedicated following. With songs like 'Alice's Restaurant' too long for radio airplay, 'Coming into Los Angeles' banned from many radio stations (but a favorite at the 1969 Woodstock Festival), and the definitive rendition of Steve Goodman's 'City of New Orleans,' Guthrie was no one-hit wonder. An artist of international stature In addition to being an accomplished musician -- playing piano, six- and twelve-string guitar harmonic and a dozen other instruments -- Guthrie is a natural-born storyteller whose hilarious tales and tireless anecdotes are woven seamlessly into his performances.
