KARAN CASEY AND JOHN DOYLE
Saturday, June 18, 2011. Evans Amphitheater, 8pm. In advance: $20 all tickets. Day of show: $23 all tickets. [buy tickets]
Karan Casey has long been one of the most innovative, provocative and imitated voices in Irish traditional and folk music. Her career has spanned 20 years: from the early days as a jazz performer in Georges Bistro in Dublin, to her heady days in New York with Solas, to her now blossoming solo career with over half a million albums sold. Karan released her first album with Solas, which quickly became the most celebrated Irish band in the U.S. Following their groundbreaking early releases, she struck out on her own. Recent years have seen Karan appearing with folk legends James Taylor, Liam Clancy, Peggy Seeger and Mick Moloney as well as performances with Solas, Lunasa, and as a key member of Paul Winter's Grammy-award winning Celtic Solstice. Karan has won awards for 'Best Folk Album' and 'Best Folk Female' from Irish Music Magazine and been nominated for the BBC Folk Awards and the Danish Grammys.
Born in Dublin to a family of musicians and singers, John Doyle was surrounded by traditional music from his earliest years. John was playing professionally by the age of 16, and soon moved to New York City, where he began playing with Eileen Ivers and Seamus Egan. His gifts as a guitarist, songwriter, vocalist, and producer have played an essential role in the ongoing renaissance of Irish traditional music. He first rose to international prominence with Solas (Gaelic for 'light'), the all-star Irish/American band whose emergence heralded the arrival of a new generation of bold, inventive traditional musicians. Doyle pioneered a rhythmic, sophisticated approach to Irish guitar accompaniment, setting a new standard for the instrument. When the original members of Solas parted ways, Doyle embarked on a solo career, producing albums for other artists and touring as a sideman as well as recording his own material. Preserving the tasteful simplicity of tradition, Doyle nonetheless adds a contemporary edge, finding fresh life in even the most well worn of tunes. His playing encompasses hard-driving strumming, inventive chord voicings, precise single-note runs, and powerful rhythmic effects borrowed from traditional instruments such as the bodhran and fiddle. After a start playing monthly gigs for friends at Santa Monica's O'Brien's Tavern in 1995, the band's popularity skyrocketed when it appeared in James Cameron's Titanic as the Celtic party band in the ship's steerage. Yet while Gaelic Storm plays Celtic music that hearkens back to the traditional music of Ireland, they are hardly traditionalists, adding modern sounds and drawing influences from American rock and pop as well as musical styles from around the world. A band known for its drinking songs, Gaelic Storm has a new classic with 'Chucky Timm,' which is about a real-life fan, a friend and former Olympic bobsledder from Ohio. Cleveland Indians third baseman Jack Hannahan is also a big fan. You'll hear Gaelic Storm's 'Kiss Me I'm Irish' whenever he's up to bat. Go Tribe! Supported by WKSU 89.7 FM.

In the two years since his critically acclaimed Salvation in Lights, Mike Farris' live performances across the country (including Bonnaroo, SXSW, Austin City Limits Festival, and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival), have left fans and seasoned artists aghast at how that sound, that soul, could come from such an unlikely source as the former Screamin' Cheetah Wheelie's frontman. His style is a marriage of traditional black gospel, 70s Stax and southern blues that Farris describes as 'music with dirt on its feet and sweat on its back. It's in our genetic makeup. It pumps through our veins. It's simple and straightforward. That's one reason why, especially in times like these, we need it. This old music draws us in and warms us up like nothing else.'

They're classics in that same great Akron tradition: they don't fit any mold but their own.
